Pony Express
Nothing meant more to people who went west in the 1840s and 1850s than mail from home. The government spent years trying to find an efficient way to move the mail across the country. It was taking 3 - 4 weeks by stagecoach. By the time you received a letter, the news was old. Then, word began spreading about a new opportunity. "Wanted, young skinny, wiry fellows not over eighteen, must be expert riders willing to risk death daily, orphans preferred. Wages $25 a week. Apply Central Overland Express."
You and your partner are reporters in a small town in Missouri in May of 1860. You've been hearing talk about something called The Pony Express. Mail has been moving at an unheard of pace. You both ask your editor if you can research this new endeavor further. He agrees but in one month you must write several articles sharing what you learned in the local paper. You are expected to answer any question a person in your town might ask you in regards to The Pony Express. Make sure you include a picture showing its route.
Print out, research and answer the following questions. You will use this information to create your news page. You can do this in Microsoft Word or Publisher. Make sure you use columns so it will look more like an actual newspaper. Include images to give your readers a more vivid picture of what you are sharing. One of the articles will be your list of sources used so make sure you cite them as you work.
